- मोहनजीत -

Writing has always been a passion, apart from photography!
He loves to write poetry and short stories about various aspects and facets of life.

mohanjeet kukreja

Mohanjeet Kukreja (eMKay) had started writing long back. Even when he was still in school, his write-ups had started appearing in newspapers and magazines. His understanding of the words used in Urdu, especially in poetry (Urdu Shayari), is truly remarkable. Using a very beautiful blend of Hindi and Urdu, he has written on almost every possible theme, be it romance, life philosophy, tragedy or sufism.

Books to his credit:

"Abhivyakti...Ek Kavya Sankalan": a wonderful, maiden collection of his poetry, with a select-mix of ashʻār, kavita, nazm, qat.a and ghazals from his shayari.

"Mangadhant"
(Hindi Short Stories): Enjoy the style and a crisp, powerful narrative in this collection. His maturity and mastery are all the more evident in some of the short-short stories (laghukatha) that the author has included in Mangadhant.

“Within and Around” (Short Stories)A concoction of twenty-one beautiful stories is his first book in English and is certainly a must have!

“Four Pillars Five Stories”
(Classic Short Stories)From the era of Neo-romanticism (Chhaayavaad Yug) of Hindi literature, there were four writers/poets, who are considered as aadharstambh (pillars) – Mahadevi Verma, Suryakant Tripathi Nirala, Jaishankar Prasad and Sumitranandan Pant. This collection is an English translation of five stories by them.

"Khayalaat - Chand Ghazlein":
A beautiful collection, of fifty-one meaningful ghazals, which is simply a delight!

Blessed with a deep, soothing voice, and a very impressive enunciation, the author also keeps sharing the audio rendition of his own creations, as well as, those from other renowned poets.

“अभिव्यक्ति” एक काव्य संकलन…

'वियोगी होगा पहला कवि, आह से उपजा होगा गान । निकलकर आँखों से चुपचाप, बही होगी कविता अनजान..।' इन पंक्तियों की रचना करने वाले, हिंदी साहित्य में छायावाद के चार स्तंभों में से एक, कवि सुमित्रानंदन पंत, का मानना था कि कविता विचारों या तथ्यों से नहीं, बल्कि अनुभूति से होती है… To Quote T. S. Eliot, “Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things.” Though it is a maiden collection as a book, the author, Mohanjeet Kukreja, is a very mature and experienced poet, who knows his words, understands the art, and masters the art of articulation. If you are a poetry lover, this is a book not to be missed! Using a very beautiful blend of Hindi and Urdu, he has written on almost every possible theme. You shall certainly enjoy the select-mix of ashʻār, kavita, nazm, qat.a and ghazals presented wonderfully as “Abhivyakti”!

Abhivyakti...Ek Kavya Sankalan - "हिम्मत-अफ़्ज़ाई !"

Abhivyakti by Mohanjeet Kukreja is his first compilation of poems, though we have been relishing his individual creations for a long time. Emkay, as we know him, has phenomenal capacity to seamlessly transition between different forms of poetry. He has covered a wide variety of subjects in his current collection. In 'ek ajnabi shehar' he expresses his disenchantment with superficial relations of urban life. He adopts a sarcastic attitude in 'dohre maanak' and lambasts existing political system. ...bhooke nange garib inko; nazar nahin aate hain; haan pathar pe paisa sona khoob charaate hain...! He beautifully portrays disappointment in love in 'khumaar' ....khudd ishq ka mazaar hun main... He displays his comfort with shorter format of poem in 'jawab' ...aur tera jawab ab bhi kahin raaste mein hi hai, shayad...! I am sure the readers will enjoy the rainbow of emotions created by Emkay in his delectable collection of poems. Happy reading... What a refreshing and brilliant collection of Hindi/Urdu poetry this "Abhivyakti" is! .

I have finally read it all! What a refreshing and brilliant collection of Hindi/Urdu poetry this "Abhivyakti" is!! The wide coverage of themes in each one of these poetic pieces is just too good. 'Himmat Afzayi', 'To Baat Bane', Andaz-e-Zindagi', Khud se kahin door', Khar-patwaar', 'Abhaav', 'Daur-e-aainda' and 'Uska Nizaam' are already some of my favourite compositions. And the best thing is the annotations that the author has very thoughtfully provided for us to understand the difficult words and enjoy his shayari in totality. Overall, a must have collection!

Ashish Bhatia (Australia)

A new generation poet has emerged on the world stage Abhivaykti is an interesting and reflective collection of thoughts of eMKay (Mohanjeet). Emkay has managed to finally print the beautiful collection of gazals, poems and nazams which he has been penning for quite some time now. Most of them are very soul searching and/or touching. I can relate to most of them and appreciate the way he has penned them. It is very heartening to see the liberal usage of Urdu words in the collection which adds to sublime thought process. One if the interesting things Emkay has done is that he has put in the meanings of some of the difficult Urdu words which helps people like me to understands the meaning of the penned literature. Some of my personal likes are Dohre Manak- a true reflection of the hypocrisy of the society that we live in Zindagi- shows us the mirror with not a nice picture in it Andaz a zindagi - nice optimistic view point Teri furkat mein- shows his romantic side( which we all know very well) Mullicka ko and Muskaan ke naam- touching tribute of a father Overall its a great collection of modern times and a must for people who love good literature! Encouragement in dire circumstances is uncanny and then the ability to let you change your mind about the outcomes done with such ease that it’s empowering! Mohanjeet has explicitly expressed his original thoughts and feelings in his book "ABHIVYAKHTI". It is a creative piece of work and each of the 101 poetic expressions in the book carries a direct or a subtle message to the reader. It provokes you to connect and think. This is attributed to the hidden talent and the passion of the author, who is otherwise a very successful Pharmaceutical professional. I strongly recommend this book for reading, I assure you that it will connect you with some of your experiences and events in your life. Best wishes!

Dr T S Kuckrejja (India)

Mohanjeet's Abhivyakti is a wonderful collection of human emotions and conflicts, expressed so very well through poetic pieces. I was really amazed to see how almost each one of these relates to me, as if it was written for me only. Feelings, which are so difficult to express at times, have been so beautifully (and easily) articulated by eMKay in his poetry. The entire collection is as fresh as dew on the leaves in early morning. You find a perfect mix of encouragement and hope in some creations, harsh criticism of the current system and politics in some, and yet a lovely outlook on life on the whole in others. Beautiful! Overall, a must read, if you appreciate shayari!!

Kavi Thakur (India)

बे-हिसाब पिला दी साक़ी ने... किसको किसका होश रहा l Beautiful, mesmerizing, nostalgic..... there are so many words to describe this riveting collection - or as eMKay called it ‘a kavay sankalan’. There are so many small and running compositions, which kept me spellbound and I was struggling to resist the urge to read just one more every time I thought of closing the book. Some of my personal favourites are - Dohre Manak, Andaz Apna Apna, Andaz-e-Zindagi, Dhuein Mein Aks, Tumhari Kasam and Kuch Khwahishein. eMKay’s poetry is like a garland of skilfully and emotionally woven words. Congratulations to the Author and I am already looking forward to the next book..

Zoher Sihorwala (India)

The very “Hindi” word “Abhivyakti” in English has many meanings, but the most befitting out of those many to the work presented by Mohanjeet, as also he writes under the other short name of eMKay, is – Expression and Articulation. The feelings that he has tried to put into the collection through meticulous selection of words in Urdu, Hindi and English defines his ability to express. Through his collection of poems/thoughts, I now realise it even more, how articulate he himself is! By academic training, I and Mohanjeet are Pharmacists – a profession where the first need defined to be called a Pharmacist is Empathy. It is that need, I felt embedded, going through the pre-publication copy of Mohanjeet’s work. As I close here, I remember the lines from that very beautiful Hindi movie by Late Shree Raj Kapoor – Satyam, Shivam, Sudaram – sung by Late Shree Mukesh et al – Kehte hain jahaan na Ravi pahunche, kehte hain wahaan par Kavi pahunche…. Mohanjeet through the heights and depths of his poetic thinking has given real pearls of Expression. I enjoyed and felt reading them, and I am sure every reader would.

Surabhi Khanna (India)

Overall it’s a treat for the readers who may find their own lives being read through the lines of this beautiful creation. Mohanjeet Kukreja’s ‘Abhivyakti ek kavya sankalan’ is a welcome addition to many books that highlight the ironies of modern world. Standing outside of everyday life’s challenges, Mohanjeet’s book is perhaps the most erudite and readable book that also details the criticalities of our lives with witty anecdotes. Mohanjeet endorses the commonly held view of looking at life as a confusing, delusional and obtuse entity, sometimes difficult to define with its growing challenges. Overall, it’s a treat for the readers who may find their own lives being read through the lines of this beautiful creation.

Simply Brilliant!! 👌 An absolutely refreshing collection of poetry in Hindi, I would say. The shayar has obviously mastered the art of conveying his thoughts so effectively. Meanings of Urdu words, used rather liberally (maybe a compulsion for some compositions, especially ghazals) is a big help. A must for all poetry lovers.

A poet ushering new era...don't miss. The poem compilation is a like a surreal voyage to ocean dotted with myriad islands- opulent green, rocky, deserted, and some with lighthouse. Right mix of contemporary cosmopolitan outlook and mystic poetry drizzled with Urdu like coming from an enlightened spirit with thousand souls. Must possess this poem collection. A must read before you die!!!

It's an Amazing collection of Poems, Shayari's What to say for eMKay. His ability and capability of choosing the words in Hindi and Urdu, and using them at most appropriate place is Amazing. Abhivyakti by eMKay... Abhivyakti. . . As in the name "expression", it has all the essence of emotions and expressions form the auther. eMKay has done full justice to the two strong words-emotion and expression! If you are a poetry lover you can't afford to miss this book..

With best wishes....

A must have collection! "Abhivyakti" The name of the collection is too good and just right! Thoughts & emotions conveyed by the author through each and every piece, directly reach the heart, and to stay there. 'Chetna' and 'Dohre Maanak' are already my favourite poems, among many others. And I especially like the beautiful couplets placed between the long poems and ghazals - very thoughtful, good and refreshing! Overall, a must have-collection! And it is just the beginning. We shall wait for more such "Abhivyaktis" from Mohanjeet....God Bless!

Great read! As I read the compositions I am taken through a myriad spectrum of emotions, predominantly pain and a sense of loss. The language clearly portrays the longing of the soul and the helplessness of the situation (fate). This is however tempered with some dry humour and ironic observations of daily life in few poems, perhaps acknowledging the inevitable course of life beyond one's control. There is a raw sense of victimization, without malice towards any particular entity and beautifully portrayed in these mature poems. Great read.

Dr Sharad Sharma (India)

Classic Collection of Hindi/ Urdu Poetry! Abhivyakti is an Ultimate collection. Each and every word of every poem touches your heart straight. As per me, some of the best ones are “Dohare manak, andaaz apna apna, Teri furkat me, Budhi kitab, Paisa, Khar Patvaar”, and there are many more. Hats off to the thoughts and the poetic ability of eMKay to put it all into words so effectively. The whole collection is heart touching! I would recommend Abivyakti to everyone who is interested in real good Hindi/Urdu poetry!

Delightful collation of poems.. The book truly glorifies Hindi poetry. Each poem correlates the journey of a person at some phase of life. Mohanjeet in his creation "dohrey manak" has beautifully expressed the contrast of human emotions.

Eloquent composition of poems It's a really good book. The way the writer plays with words is quite amazing, The poems and shayaries are not just meaningful but inspiring too, a quality which most of the writers lack. Every part of life is there in this book, I've it twice so far and still keep it with me at all times!

But there is a story behind everything…. As one very effective means of expression, a story as a form of writing, needs no introduction. It always was, is, and shall, continue to be an integral part of traditions and literature, whatever language it be - across the globe. Two world-famous stories – ‘The Mark of Vishnu’ By Khushwant Singh and ‘The Gift of the Magi’ By O Henry – translated by the author from English, bring home this point adequately. If you like reading, and especially stories, you are simply going to love the crisp and powerful narration that the author, Mohanjeet Kukreja, has, and very effectively used in all these twenty-one short stories. Most of what this beautiful collection has, is certainly going to leave an impact…. The wide subject coverage and the plots sound so real that you, as a reader, cannot stop relating to the ideas shared through various anecdotes. And you will just enjoy reading them all!!

A short story from the collection...

Kudos to a genuine writer..... I got a chance to devour a short story compilation by Mohanjeet who was well appreciated for his successful poetry collation “Abhivyakti” published late last year. I admit that the author has not disappointed a bit with this new release. I finished the assemblage on a Mumbai Bangalore flight. The book is so captivating! I really loved stories like “Kaalikh”, “Agla Darwaza”, “Helmet”, “Pratisthapan”, to name a few. It seems that the author has seen or experienced many of these and I feel the anthology is more of “Aapbeeti” than “Manghadant” though “Manghadant” means creation of mind…. I will not go on and spoil the mazaa of stories by narrating here; you have to read it to satisfy your hunger for good writing in today’s scenario. When I was reading the book, many a times I felt that the author himself is sitting besides me and narrating the stories. I must say that I have one complaint too; I felt that the stories were too short. I wanted them to go on and on and not to end so early. My humble request to the author is to publish a novel so that readers like me can quench our thirst. You write so beautifully, taking care of the minute aspects, and create awareness of intricacies of life. I wish you all the best for your next concoction!

Fascinating reading! Ghazals, Nazms, kavita, Katta, Kahaniyan – there are many strings to Mohanjeet's bow! This one is a beautiful collection of short stories. The stories are structured around striking images that are emblematic of the individual stories, and also of his extremely visual writing skill. Mohanjeet's first collection of short stories offers cheeky intellectualism, silent protests against gross social misconducts, romance, tragedy, suspense, humour and what not! Like many short story collections at the moment, you would be hard-pushed to find an underlying theme, though this is no bad thing. In fact, it would be reductive to seek a linking subject in a collection whose major accomplishments involve the extraordinary spread of topics, styles, and characters. The stories deserve a special mention are Kaalikh, shaadi ka pehla card, mrityotsab, bitto, baap re baap, anti-climax to name a few of-course. Even, the translated ones, Majusiyon ka uphaar (The gift of the Magi) & Vishnu ka Prateek (Mark of Vishnu) are so fascinating to read! No doubt, these short stories are stylistically unified by his distinctive use of language which blends a realist narrative style, punctuated by flat, dead-pan humour, with allusions to magical storytelling. I would expect more from Mohanjeet in near future … including Novels! Happy reading..

Arvind Bansal (India)

Mangharant, Mohanjeet's new collection of stories, has been published shortly after his collection of poems - Abhivyakti. It underlines his versatility in using different formats of literature to express his feelings. Mangharant is a collection of 21 stories which capture day to day life, with its sorrows, happiness, and struggles. His masterly handling of words weaves an impressive array of stories that touch the heart because they are so close to everyone's life. "Agla darwaja" hits you with the heartless realities of living in a metropolitan city. Light hearted story "Anti climax", creates a subtle humor through a conversation between a father and his daughter. Mohanjeet has the capacity to laugh at himself, as is demonstrated in "change ka kissa". Mohanjeet's skill of translating the works of stalwarts is amply demonstrated in "Vishnu ka prateek" and "Majusiyon ka uphaar". He is able to get connected with the reader through his stories because of the simplicity of the thoughts. This is by all means the most valuable outcome for any writer.

Another literary gift! After a collection of poems – Abhivyakti, this short story collection by Mohanjeet will take you to a different realm of real 'Mangadhant' stories - so lucid, impactful and yet very close to life around us all. Greatness of these stories written in different shades lies in their fast-paced plots, pertinent verbiage and jolting ends. Mohanjeet has established that you don't really need grand plots to make stories impactful, but rather a simplicity and life oozing out of it! Start reading...

Mangadhant? Really!?! I'd read 'Abhivyakti: Ek Kaya Sanklan' by this author earlier, and always thought that Mohaneet is a great shayar, a poet. Having gone through 'Mangadhant' now, I realize that he is a very good story teller, as well. I am simply impressed by his style! At the same time, I wonder if all of these stories can only be out of his imagination. Read it to decide...

Heartfelt Thank you... Generations come and generations go.. and many people might have not read the beautiful works created by various authors.. just because of their language which are a bit difficult to follow.. It is a genuine effort by Mohanjeet Kukreja Sir and I believe justice has been given to the stories after translation.. I would never have come across these stories.. but many many heartfelt Thanks to Mr. Mohanjeet Kukreja for these beautiful translations.. Looking forward for much more similar type of amazing work..

Dr T S Kuckrejja

A literary treasure! I remember having read some of these classic stories in Hindi, and believe me, it is really tough to fully understand the original language used by their legendary writers. This work must have been a challenge for the translator, and will truly go a long way in taking these beautiful stories to the masses, especially those who have not read, or cannot read, them in Hindi.

Kudos! A beautiful collection of Ghazals by a multilingual writer. Emkay as his pen name, Mohanjeet's creativity varies from photography to short stories and ghazals. Articulated intricately to portray candor in experience or imagination, his work makes one ponder and realise its proximity to reality. Simpler words or meanings at end of the Ghazal make it more understandable to the likes of me who are not yet fluent in the language. Definitely a must read for all those who enjoy Ghazals and hey....the newbies, get ready for a new liking in literature.

Very meaningful gems! Loved reading all the ghazals and re-reading many. Meaningful and true. The best part is Hindi translation of some difficult (for me) Urdu words. This made it very easy for me to get to the core. I liked almost all but the following are my favorites: - Charaag to jalao zaraa - Zamaana kharaab hai - Phir nayi koi saazish hai - Saamaan kidhar gaya - Dhara reh jayega Best Wishes.

10/10 The best ever I'm simply honoured to have this collection of ghazals dedicated to me. Just when you get hooked on one and think that it can't get better, eMKay surprises you with the next. These are ghazals that you don't just read; you feel them, in your heart, with goosebumps on your skin... This anthology is, hands down, one of the best works of the author!

Recommended. I know Mohanjeet from past seven years. I listen to him many a times. He has traveled a long distance from where he has started. This book justifies his journey and depth he has gained. Definite recommendation.
